In Bihar's Araria district, chaos erupted as locals stormed a police station following the alleged suicide of a man and his minor sister-in-law, who had recently "married". The incident occurred after the pair, accused of unlawful wedlock, reportedly took their own lives while in police custody. Two civilians were injured in the ensuing police firing and have been hospitalized.
The turmoil began after the man from Tarauna village wed his 14-year-old sister-in-law, prompting his wife to file a complaint with the authorities. Subsequently, the police detained the "couple", who allegedly ended their lives while under police supervision.
As news of the deaths spread, enraged villagers gathered at the police station and launched a violent attack. They vandalized the premises, setting fire to a thatched structure and pelting stones at law enforcement officers.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Rampukar Singh, one of three officers injured in the clashes, remarked, "Villagers were not willing to heed the police's explanation and assaulted us." In response, the police resorted to firing, resulting in injuries to two individuals.
While the families of the deceased have accused the police of brutality leading to the deaths, Araria Superintendent of Police Amit Ranjan asserted, "It was a case of suicide. We have arrested 19 people for attacking the police station based on video evidence."
