In 2021, air pollution caused 8.1 million deaths worldwide, with more than half of this global burden attributed to China and India, accounting for 2.3 million and 2.1 million deaths respectively, according to the recently released State of Global Air Report.


According to the report, air pollution is now considered one of the primary global killers, ranking second only to high blood pressure. In fact, it surpasses tobacco consumption as a leading cause of death and disability. Among the total deaths, 700,000 were children under the age of 5 years. The report emphasizes that air pollution presents a significant and escalating public health challenge.
